Why does skin change during the teenage years?
Hormonal changes during puberty can affect oil production and the way the skin behaves.
Some teenagers may notice:
- increased oiliness or shine
- blackheads and blocked pores
- occasional spots
- persistent breakouts
- changes in skin texture
- dryness or sensitivity
- different concerns across different areas of the face
And while breakouts are common during the teenage years, there is no single “teen skin type”. One teenager may have very oily skin, while another may be dealing with sensitivity, dehydration or a mixture of concerns.
That is why age alone should not decide the routine.
Start with the basics
A good teen skincare routine does not need to begin with a shelf full of products.
For many teenagers, the foundations matter most:
- appropriate cleansing
- hydration/ moisturising where needed
- daily sun protection
- targeted products only where there is a clear reason to use them
Once those basics are working well, additional products can be considered based on what the skin is actually experiencing.
Starting simply also makes it much easier to understand how the skin responds to each product.
When breakout skincare becomes too much
When spots appear, it is understandable to want them gone quickly.
That can lead to washing the face more often, using harsh scrubs, layering multiple acids or repeatedly applying strong spot treatments. But making the skin feel stripped, tight or sore is not a sign that a routine is working harder.
Teen skin can still become dehydrated, sensitised and uncomfortable.
If a routine is causing persistent stinging, flaking or irritation, adding another breakout product may not be the answer. Sometimes the routine itself needs reviewed.
Viral does not always mean right for your skin
A product can be popular online and still be completely unnecessary for an individual teenager.
Skincare trends move quickly, but skin does not need to follow them.
Before adding another active ingredient, it is worth asking: what is this product meant to do, does the skin actually need it, and is something else in the routine already doing the same job?
At Touch & Glow, we would rather help build a smaller routine with a clear purpose than recommend products simply because they are trending.
Teen breakouts and acne are not always the same thing
Occasional spots are common, but persistent, painful or severe breakouts may be acne and can require medical support.
If breakouts are causing scarring, include deep or painful spots, are not improving or are having a significant impact on confidence and wellbeing, speak to your GP or an appropriate healthcare professional. Early medical support can be particularly important where there is a risk of scarring.
Skincare can play a supportive role, but it should not delay appropriate medical advice.
Need help choosing?
If you are a teenager trying to make sense of skincare, or a parent looking at a bathroom shelf full of products and wondering where they all came from, our team can help.
At Touch & Glow, we take a practical, considered approach to teen skin. We can help review what is currently being used, identify unnecessary overlap and choose products that make sense for the skin rather than the latest trend.
