Peel Season Is Here: Why Autumn Is the Perfect Time to Get Serious About Your Skin

Peel Season Is Here: Why Autumn Is the Perfect Time to Get Serious About Your Skin

September marks a change in the treatment calendar at Touch & Glow.

As we move away from summer and sun exposure begins to reduce, we can start thinking again about some of the advanced skin treatments that require more careful management around UV exposure - including professional skin peels, IPL and microneedling.

But there’s an important distinction to make.

Autumn being “peel season” doesn't mean everybody should rush to book a peel as soon as September arrives.

In fact, particularly when we're talking about pigmentation after summer, October is one of the key months in our treatment calendar.

Here's why.

If pigmentation is your concern, give it time to come to the surface

After more than 20 years working as a skin therapist, our Clinical Director Charlene is a big believer in treating the skin that's actually in front of us, and sometimes that means knowing when to hold off.

If you've spent time in the sun throughout June, July and August, the pigmentation sitting within your skin may not all have come to the surface by the beginning of September.

So what you see when you look in the mirror in early September may not yet give us the full picture.

That's why, when pigmentation is the main concern, Charlene will often recommend using September as an assessment period and looking towards October to begin treatment.

By October, we've allowed more time for that post-summer pigmentation to come to the surface. We can see more clearly what we're dealing with and make a much more considered decision about the treatments and homecare that are right for your skin.

And that doesn't only apply to professional treatments.

Imagine starting a completely new pigmentation-focused skincare routine in September. You introduce brightening products, add a vitamin C serum or perhaps have a professional treatment.

Then October arrives and you think:

“My pigmentation looks worse. Is this actually working?”

It doesn't necessarily mean those products or treatments have made your pigmentation worse.

What you're seeing may simply be pigmentation from your summer sun exposure continuing to come to the surface.

That's why Charlene's approach to post-summer pigmentation is often:

September: assess, scan and allow the skin time.
October: reassess what has surfaced and begin the right treatment plan.

Rather than immediately introducing multiple new products or treatments in September, we'd rather get a clearer picture of the pigmentation we're actually dealing with and then invest your time and money in the right approach.

If pigmentation is your main concern, a professional skin scan is a particularly useful place to start. It allows us to look more closely at the extent of the pigmentation and customise your treatment and homecare plan accordingly.

September can be the beginning of your skin plan. October is when we can really start getting to work.

So, what actually is “peel season”?

Despite the name, peel season isn't only about chemical peels.

It's the period as we move into autumn and winter when reduced sun exposure gives us a better opportunity to plan certain professional skin treatments and their aftercare.

Treatments such as professional peels and microneedling require careful aftercare and sun protection while the skin recovers. IPL also requires careful consideration of recent sun exposure and shouldn't be performed on recently tanned skin.

That's why October onwards is such an important part of our treatment calendar at Touch & Glow.

But the right treatment — and the right time to begin it — still isn't the same for everyone.

If we're treating texture, fine lines, acne scarring or general skin rejuvenation, your autumn plan may look very different from someone coming to us specifically because of post-summer pigmentation.

Why does your skin often look different after summer?

Several months of increased UV exposure, heat, holidays, travel and changes to your normal skincare routine can all affect how your skin looks and feels.

As summer ends and we move through September, you may begin to notice:

  • Pigmentation or dark spots coming to the surface
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Dull or rough-looking skin
  • Dehydration
  • Fine lines looking more noticeable
  • Changes in texture
  • Redness
  • Skin simply not looking as fresh as it did before summer

The temptation can be to immediately reach for a new serum, book the strongest treatment available or completely overhaul your skincare.

That's not always what your skin needs.

First, we need to understand what's actually changed, what your main concern is and what we're trying to achieve.

What are we trying to improve after summer?

Pigmentation and sun spots

This is where timing becomes particularly important.

If pigmentation is your main concern following summer, September is often the month we'd rather assess than rush to correct it.

We want to allow time for pigmentation from your summer sun exposure to come to the surface. Then, as we move into October, we can reassess your skin and get a much clearer picture of what we're treating.

Depending on your skin, the type and extent of pigmentation and your treatment suitability, your plan may include IPL, professional skin peels, targeted homecare or a combination of approaches.

A professional skin scan can be particularly useful here because it helps us assess the extent of the concern before deciding where your money and treatment time are best spent.

Dullness and uneven tone

If pigmentation isn't your primary concern and your skin simply feels dull, tired or uneven after summer, we don't necessarily need to follow the same timeline.

Depending on your skin and recent sun exposure, a professional peel may form part of a plan to refresh and brighten its appearance.

The type and strength of peel should always be selected for your skin, rather than assuming stronger means better.

Texture, fine lines or acne scarring

If texture is what you're noticing, microneedling may be considered as part of a treatment plan focused on skin rejuvenation and collagen stimulation.

This can include concerns such as uneven texture, fine lines and certain types of acne scarring.

Again, suitability and recent sun exposure matter, but pigmentation isn't the concern we're trying to allow time to surface, so your treatment timeline may be different.

Redness or visible vessels

IPL may also be considered for certain types of redness and visible vessels.

Suitability matters here too, so we'll assess your skin, recent sun exposure and the concern we're treating before recommending it.

Not sure which category you fall into?

That's completely fine.

You don't need to diagnose your own skin before coming to see us. That's our job.

Professional skin peels: for brighter, smoother-looking skin

Professional peels use carefully selected solutions to encourage exfoliation and skin renewal.

Depending on the peel and your individual skin concerns, they can form part of a treatment plan for dullness, uneven tone, pigmentation, rough texture, fine lines and certain types of breakout-prone skin.

And don't let the word peel scare you.

There are different types and strengths of professional peel with very different treatment experiences and levels of downtime.

At Touch & Glow, we're much more interested in choosing the right peel for your skin than simply choosing the strongest one.

For some concerns, we may recommend a course of treatments rather than expecting one appointment to do all the work.

If pigmentation is what we're treating after summer, October is generally when we'd prefer to begin. By then, we've given that pigmentation more time to come to the surface and can make a better-informed decision about how to approach it.

IPL: when pigmentation or redness is the concern

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) uses pulses of broad-spectrum light and may be used to target concerns including:

Pigmentation and sun spots
Redness and visible vessels
Uneven skin tone
Overall skin rejuvenation

IPL isn't appropriate for every skin type or every form of pigmentation, which is why assessment is so important.

It also requires careful consideration of sun exposure and shouldn't be performed on recently tanned skin.

If you're coming out of summer particularly concerned about pigmentation, we don't automatically jump straight into IPL in September.

We'd rather use that time to assess your skin, allow the pigmentation to come to the surface and, where appropriate, look towards October to begin your treatment programme.

Microneedling: when texture and rejuvenation are the goal

Microneedling is another treatment we start talking about more as we move into autumn.

It creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating the skin's natural repair response and collagen production.

Depending on the individual, microneedling may form part of a treatment plan for concerns including fine lines, uneven texture and acne scarring.

Results aren't about one dramatic overnight transformation.

Collagen production takes time, and for many concerns a course of treatments may be recommended. Autumn gives us an opportunity to plan those treatments over the months ahead while carefully managing your skin and aftercare.

And importantly, the October recommendation we've discussed for post-summer pigmentation doesn't mean every client has to wait until October for every treatment.

If pigmentation isn't your concern, your skin is suitable and recent sun exposure isn't an issue, we can advise you on the right time to begin.

So which treatment does your skin actually need?

This is probably the most important part of the whole conversation.

Pigmentation doesn't automatically mean IPL.

Dullness doesn't automatically mean a peel.

And wanting smoother skin doesn't automatically mean microneedling.

Your skin type, current condition, treatment history, recent sun exposure, existing skincare routine and what you're actually trying to achieve all matter.

And sometimes in September our recommendation might simply be:

“Let's give it another few weeks and look again in October.”

We'd rather tell you to wait until we can properly assess what has come to the surface and spend your money on the right treatment at the right time than rush into something simply because “peel season” has arrived.

Sometimes one treatment will be appropriate.

Sometimes we'll create a carefully planned combination of professional treatments and homecare over several months.

That's what a bespoke skin plan should look like.

September is for assessing. October is when we really get to work.

If pigmentation is your concern after summer, that's perhaps the biggest takeaway we'd like you to have from this article.

September doesn't need to be the month you throw everything at your skin.

It can be the month we scan it, assess it and allow time for post-summer pigmentation to come to the surface.

Then October becomes a key treatment month - when we can reassess your skin and start putting the right plan into action.

If pigmentation isn't your concern, your timeline may be different. Professional peels, IPL or microneedling may be appropriate earlier depending on your skin, recent sun exposure and individual suitability.

And whatever treatment we're considering, one thing doesn't change when summer ends:

SPF still matters.

UV exposure doesn't disappear because the temperature drops. Daily sun protection remains an important part of looking after your skin throughout autumn and winter, particularly when you're investing in professional skin treatments.

Ready to make a plan for your skin?

If summer has left you wondering what your skin needs next, you don't have to work it out yourself.

At Touch & Glow Skin & Laser Clinic, we'll look at your skin, your concerns, your recent sun exposure and what you actually want to achieve before recommending where to go next.

That could mean beginning treatment now.

It could mean adjusting your homecare.
